To maintain quality standards, participants must demonstrate an acceptable level of competency to receive credit for the class. Our trainers measure this through observation, class participation, and examination. There are no refunds for participants who fail to meet required competency standards.

Olivete is not responsible for injuries incurred during training. Some classes, including Prevention and Support and CPR/First Aid involve physical techniques that require students to be in good health and capable of some strenuous activity. Prevention and Support is not recommended for individuals with certain physical conditions which may include, but not limited to knee injuries, back injuries, pregnancy, vertebrae fusion, spinal cord injuries or inability to use any body part normally. Class members participate at their own risk, but our trainers may also remove class members if they are uncomfortable with the perceived risk of injury.

General Curriculum

This course provides a general orientation to the provision of services for people with developmental disabilities, and related policies and instructions of the Division of Developmental Disabilities.  Article 9 applies to all programs operated, licensed, certified, supervised, or financially supported by the Arizona Department of Economic Security Division of Developmental Disabilities (DES/DDD).

Course content covers:

  • legally mandated rights of individuals with developmental disabilities,
  • confidentiality, abuse and neglect prohibitions.

Successful completion is measured by comprehensive written examination followed by receipt of three year certification.

Meet your OSHA workplace requirements by attending this instructor-led course where you’ll have the opportunity to learn from and interact with a Red Cross Instructor who will guide you through hands-on-practice of lifesaving skills.

Participants will learn:

  • how to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies in adults, infants and children,
  • the use of automated external defibrillators (AED); and
  • how to respond to common first aid emergencies, including burns, cuts, head, neck, back injuries and more.

Successful students will receive a certificate of Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

This course teaches those with a duty to respond how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants.

Core content includes:

  • performing a primary assessment,
  • giving ventilations (including BVM),
  • choking (conscious and unconscious),
  • CPR (one and two rescuer), and AED.

Optional training is available on emergency oxygen, blood borne pathogens, asthma inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors.

Level 1- Caregiver Fundamentals is the first part in the Direct Care Worker Principles of Caregiving series. It contains the material that is most likely needed by all direct care and direct support professionals. Additional training is available if you provide personal care or assistance with activities of daily living. This initial module is designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to caregiving and direct supports in preparation for working with a variety of clients and employers.

  • legal and ethical issues,
  • communication,
  • cultural competency,
  • job management skills,
  • observing/reporting and documenting,
  • infection control,
  • nutrition and food preparation,
  • fire safety and emergency procedures, and

Level Two – Developmental Disabilities course builds on the fundamentals module and contains advanced material for DCWs working with children or adults with developmental disabilities. The purpose of this module is to increase your knowledge of a few of the more common disabilities and how they may affect people. The Fundamentals module should be completed first. Topics covered include:

  • working with people with developmental disabilities,
  • knowledge of developmental disabilities,
  • abuse and neglect,
  • role of the DSP and requirements of the division of developmental disabilities,
  • support plans,
  • activities of daily living,

This course provides an introduction to the basics of self-administered medication monitoring and documentation for providers contracted with the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS).

Course objectives include:

  • A complete review of health and wellness.
  • Introduction to common symptoms of illness.
  • Medication basics including: purpose of medication; administration of medication, and prevention of medication errors.
  • Review of medication side effects.
  • Guideline regarding psychotropic medications.
  • Provides hands-on experience reading labels and documenting administration of medications.

The role and importance of nutrition is an important responsibility of direct care providers serving both children and adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities, and aging adults including those with Alzheimers Disease and related disorders.

The Nutrition and Meal Planning class provides participants the opportunity to learn the elements of:

basic nutrition, menu planning, food safety, special dietary needs and diets, in addition to menu and shopping tips.

Competency will be demonstrated through the development of a comprehensive menu planning activity.

The material covered in the class is designed for care providers working with individuals who are aging or have physical disabilities. A combination of both classroom and hands-on learning offers the opportunity to learn and demonstrate care giving skills

Areas of focus include: skin care, bathing, transfers and positioning, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meal assistance.

This is a highly interactive class requiring both verbal and physical participation.  Each student must successfully demonstrate knowledge and application in the following key area:

  • Identify reasons why behaviors may occur
  • Identify methods to successfully engage with every client
  • Techniques to support positive behavior
  • How to handle conflicts
  • Describe and role‐play redirection and/or avoiding a power struggle
  • Identify culture‐specific concepts and practices and their impact on the individual.
  • Identify cultural barriers
  • Define the term “cultural competence” and what constitutes competent care
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques.

Intended for those providers contracted through the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities and serving individuals with behavioral challenges. You must be affiliated with a DES/DDD qualified vendor  to be certified in Prevention & Support.  Persons not affiliated with DES/DDD may participated in the class, but will only receive a certificate of participation.

Course content includes:

  • an overview of positive behavioral support concepts and techniques,
  • behavior assessment ideas and tools, and
  • approved physical intervention techniques.

Successful completion is measured by a comprehensive written and physical examination. Successful course participants receive a three year certification.

Special Clothing for Prevention and Support:

  • Shoes that are closed-toe and closed-heel. Tennis (athletic) shoes are recommended
  • Comfortable clothing designed for use during exercise-like activity.
